Home is Where the Health Is: How Physicians CareConnection Kept the Community Housed During the Pandemic
By late March 2020, staying at home was a matter of health safety for all of Central Ohio. But with shutdown realities, thousands of individuals and families quickly faced eviction, and in turn, an increased risk for COVID-19.
Mobilizing their network of volunteers and employees, Physicians CareConnection (PCC) jumped into action by joining other community groups to help 7,600 Central Ohio renters collaborate with their landlords and take full advantage of Columbus’ Rental Assistance Program.
By working directly with their patients, PCC ensured those at-risk had access to the available resources. From this effort, Physicians CareConnection helped families in vulnerable positions stay together in their homes and reduce the COVID-19 spread throughout the community.
Renters’ assistance is only one of the ways physicians and care coordinators are putting vulnerable members of our community first. They are working together to optimize the health of any person who faces limited access to medical care and provide resources to support unmet needs contributing to healthcare barriers such as housing and utilities, food and nutrition, education, transportation, and social services.
Today, PCC, an affiliate of the Columbus Medical Association, continues to serve any person who has healthcare challenges due to individual barriers across a seven-county area, including Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Fairfield, Pickaway, Union, and Madison counties.
