Columbus Medical Association Statement Regarding Vaccinations & HB 248

The surge of the Delta variant is a sobering reminder of the health risks that are still prevalent in our community. The Columbus Medical Association stands in full support of vaccination as the primary way to put the COVID-19 pandemic behind us and avoid the return of more stringent public health measures.

The CMA’s support of vaccination is rooted in the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and the consensus input from all leading American healthcare organizations representing physicians and other healthcare providers, as well as hospitals and other healthcare facility operators.

Everyone who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated. The underlying science and medical experience of millions of patients is clear – COVID-19 vaccines work to protect patients from illness and death.

As medical professionals, we support vaccination for our patients; additionally, we support required vaccination for ourselves and all associates of healthcare organizations. There is an ethical commitment of all health care workers to prioritize patients’ needs and take all steps necessary to ensure their health and well-being. Vaccination is a logical requirement for those of us who choose to work in healthcare.

The Columbus Medical Association adds its voice to all of those in opposition to HB 248. This legislation is a detriment to good health policy for patients, will contribute to disruption in society due to increasing the likelihood of the pandemic’s impacts and it infringes on the rights of healthcare employers to establish work rules that can protect their patients.
